Nice Vegetarian
A Friendly Place!
I have run out of patience, please help a girl out!

stop to smell the...
I just don't know where else to ask......

I have been a vegetarian for 6 years now, but for the last 4 years, I have not been able to eat certain things, like broccoli or cabbage. I know my aunt has stomach issues as well but she's not a vegetarian. Seriously, the first two years of being veggie, I could eat an entire bowl of broccoli without it sending me into the restroom -- and for lack of better words-cleaning me out. I haven't narrowed it quite down to what all does send me to the restroom, and I do take some enzymes to help it not be so bad, but is it me or does my tummy hate me? I should mention that I freaking LOVE broccoli, but I hate what it does to me. I can eat it in cheddar & broccoli soup, but if I eat too much.... It's not just broccoli, either. Sometimes it's bell peppers. I love eating all veggies, but sometimes it takes a toll on my tummy. Is it just me? Am I doing something wrong? I also thought it might have been anxiety related, such as IBS which also has no rhyme or reason, but then why do the plant enzymes work?

Desperately seeking help.

I have figured it out! The FODMAP diet is what is working for me! I will forever miss my broccoli, but at least I can still have a stem or two before it really affects me!! Thank you so much for all who have commented!!!

You don't mention if the veggies are raw or cooked. I myself have a hard time with raw broccoli (and carrots) but I'm certain in my case it's because I've had bariatric surgery and my stomach can't break down fiberous food the way it used to.

I'd check with a health expert, who would have more insight into your situation. And Good luck!

You know, the more I think about it, the more I think I am a bit unhealthy when it comes to my eating. Eating an entire bowl of broccoli isn't all that filling and it is a lot of fiber.
When I eat crispy broccoli, I have issues. When I eat the more soggy broccoli, I don't have issues per say.

Like cincoflex, I think it's because they're uncooked. I don't like broccoli that much but if I eat a ton of raw veggies, they're not easy on my stomach either.

If I eat very very very small amounts of broccoli, it's not an issue, esp if I'm eating other stuff. I also thought that because I'm veg and I don't have dead animals stuck in my gut, the veggies don't take long to digest.

I think that I just over do the veggies at times. Thanks for the feedback!

I have the same thing and I am veg. Sometimes, when certain foods do this to you, my doctor told me that I probably needed a cleanse, unless it is around my time of the month. I usually will drink a bunch of water with those foods as well and that helps a lot.

Sorry it took me so long to respond! I have some enzymes I get from whole foods, plant enzymes to be exact, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what they are called. They help when I have gone overboard. I don't think I eat the right portions of anything, esp fiber. I fend for myself, meaning I don't have to cook for anyone and no one cooks for me, so I eat whatever I can get my hands on. I don't usually cook meals, or rather I cook meals on the fly. Hahaa, I usually eat whatever I have on hand and don't plan my meals.

You might want to experiment with FODMAP sensitivity diets. Might help!

First of all, I wanted to reply back here like a month ago, but every time I tried to, LJ wouldn't cooperate.
